What does Technology mean?

Before this class I had a misconception of what it meant to use technology in the classroom. I thought that it meant that you had to use the newest and greatest inventions and incorporating them into your classroom. Technology does have to be a computer, a cell phone or video games. Technology is really anything and how are you advance what you do with it. Overheads have been around forever, but how can I develop or incorporate this into my classroom enhance learning. What can I have students do with textbooks, paper, pencil or markers? Those are technologies too. Using technology in the classroom is changing the way that you think about what you have in your classroom and how are you take it up a level for the students.

Now with that being said, of course ideally I would have all of this advance technology, such as computers, smartboards etc would be in my classroom. It is the up and coming thing and students love technology. But we need to remember, if we were not in a school were the expensive technology is available there are still some ways to get some stuff into your classroom.

  1. Megan,
That is a very good point to address. Technology is a multi-faceted term. I contemplate the same questions every time I go to my field placement in Lansing. They have some computers and an overheard, but what can I specifically do to enhance my students' learning with the technology standards? One way that I have thought of is by writing grants. Individual classrooms are able to do so! I was recently talking to a fellow peer in the College of Education at MSU, and her CT writes a grant every year for an expensive butterfly project that they do. Sure enough, she is granted the money yearly. As teachers, we will be extremely busy with lesson plans, parents, co-workers, and most importantly our students. We must take the time to research options for ourselves and utilize them to the best of our ability.
    Cheers,
    Kaitlyn

  3. This is a really good point. There are always loop wholes around every obstacles and I feel as young, new teachers we need to keep teaching exciting. If that means taking extra time and writing grants or doing fund raisers to better our students learning, then we are going to have to be motivated enough to do!
